Shelby Anderson

Demonstrating The Arc NCR’s Mission

Shelby consistently displays our mission in her work at The Arc NCR! She was instrumental in the success of Developmental Disabilities (DD) Day in Annapolis! She worked with another co-worker and truly showed her passion for our mission through her actions.

Displaying Leadership

Shelby worked tirelessly to coordinate supported individuals, their families, and arranged transportation so that supported individuals could advocate for themselves in Annapolis on DD Day. Shelby even drove the van down to Annapolis and safely got all passengers to the event. Shelby is a true leader and continues to display her leadership skills in her position at The Arc NCR!

Olatunde “Bolaji” Babafemi

Title/Department: Community Living

Here are the Highlights from Bolaji’s nomination:

Demonstrating The Arc NCR’s Mission

Bolaji has been a Direct Support Professional with The Arc NCR for several years and has been an exemplary employee. In 2019, he won The Arc NCR’s DSP of the Year award, which can be attributed to his dedication, innovation, and passion for his work. This passion for the mission has proven to be no different during the COVID-19 pandemic as he continued to work tirelessly to help people we support to not feel isolated and alone.  He consistently developed new activities to keep people engaged and active even while they had to stay at home.

Displaying Leadership

Bolaji works full-time in a house where two of the three gentlemen living tested positive for COVID-19. He worked 12-hour shifts, multiple days in a row and ensured the highest quality of support was upheld. He sacrificed time away from his family, as he had to self-isolate while working at a quarantined house. Bolaji is the type of person that puts others before himself.  He is an exemplary DSP and team member at The Arc NCR.

Paige Beemer

Advocating for Supported Individuals

Paige is a true advocate for individuals we support at The Arc NCR! Paige noticed that one of the individuals we support was wearing the same work pants daily.  In a positive way, she asked this individual about it. After discussing this topic with him, she realized that he needed new work pants so she advocated for him and spoke with his staff to help him purchase a new pair of pants.

Enhancing Community Participation for Supported Individuals

Anytime an event is happening such as a Prom or Dance, Paige ensures that the individuals we support have the funds and outfits to attend these events.  She is caring and supportive and she promotes community participation for all individuals we support. Paige always has compassion for the individuals supported by The Arc NCR!

Jessica Bonsiero

Jessica helps the person she supports access the community and attend community events.  She is always willing to change her schedule to accommodate specific events so that the individual she supports can attend. She loves getting out in the community with the supported individual to have fun and experience new things every week.

Christine Cameron

Advocating for Supported Individuals

Christine is a great 1:1 with her supported individual. She is always advocating for her supported individual when she takes him out to eat making sure that he gets exactly what he wants. When people out in the community say discouraging things to her supported individual, she tells them that he is no different than anyone else.

Christine takes her supported individual out to the park, the grocery store, restaurants and to the train station.  She promotes getting out into the community which has been very good for her supported individual. Christine consistently promotes community participation!

Crystal DeJesus

Advocating for Supported Individuals

Crystal works very hard in partnering with DDA on behalf of The Arc NCR and the individuals we support. She partners to ensure people we support are eligible to receive the supports needed to live a successful and independent life.  For example, there have been a lot of outstanding items that had not been approved for funding that supported individuals wanted and needed. Crystal worked very hard and consistently to have those items cleared up so that the agency could best support them.

Displaying Leadership

Crystal worked tirelessly to secure funding to provide awake overnight shifts, unfunded hours, and other service areas that were needed for people supported by The Arc NCR.  She took the initiative to research, contact the proper people to get funding authorized, and submitted all proper documentation.  All her efforts allowed the agency to accurately capture necessary and critical funds and most importantly for the individuals we support to get the services they so much deserve.

Tina Eitani

Tina leads team meetings, admission interviews and observation. She arranged an observation at a high school to see an admissions candidate before her interview. Tina always shows leadership in her position here at The Arc NCR and she leads by example in her daily work.

Tina and her team have been extremely involved in the new waiver discussions. Tina is always advocating for community-based employment. She truly cares about the individuals supported by The Arc NCR and is passionate about helping them find meaningful community integrated employment.

Amprise Eaton

Natarra Duffus

Advocating for Supported Individuals

Natarra worked with an individual 1:1 to provide around the clock care while this person was in the ER awaiting a bed at the hospital. Natarra took the time to explain this individual’s needs to the hospital staff to ensure that this individual was properly taken care of and supported. Natarra is consistently advocating for those she supports at The Arc NCR!

Natarra took on the role of House Supervisor in addition to care provider while dedicating assistance to make sure all needs have been met for everyone in the house. She is a leader in her daily work and continues to always be pro-active on the job.

Taliesha Douglas

Taliesha demonstrates The Arc NCR’s mission every day! She is a hard worker and so compassionate to the individuals with differing abilities. She always is making sure their goals are met and they are thriving in the community!

Taliesha displays leadership by her actions.  During the pandemic she continued to sanitize the house and made sure that all paperwork was in order. She is a team player but also a great leader. She also stepped up to the plate and helps one of the homes with their medication on Saturday mornings.  She is a true leader for The Arc NCR!

Stephanie Harris

Advocating for Supported Individuals

Stephanie takes an active role alongside the people she supports. She is very encouraging and helps remind the people she supports of positive activities that have gone well for them.  Stephanie always advocates for their supports and educates them on how to advocate for themselves. Stephanie does encourage those who are learning to functionally communicate to speak for themselves, rather than jump in and speak for them.  Her support encourages people to strive for greater independence.

Displaying Leadership

When COVID-19 happened, Stephanie was one of the few staff with a pre-established relationship with someone who needed 1:1 staffing. She filled in and has filled this person’s life with opportunities to shine by taking her out in the community, following her support plan, and letting her live her best life.  She continues to lead by example, peer training and coaching other staff to develop positive relationships with the person supported.

As a one on one, Shay advocates for the individual she supports in the highest regard. She is dedicated and no matter what the set back is in the day she continues to support this individual with a smile. Shay empowers the person she supports to live, work and thrive in the community!

Shay showed great leadership when it came to a needed appointment for one of the individuals she supports.  Instead of reaching out to her Supervisor, she made the appointment on her own, printed out the RMA and assisted at the appointment to make sure the proper medications were filled in a timely matter. Shay is a true leader at The Arc NCR!

Genneh always advocates for the supported individuals she coaches. She had a situation where one of the individuals she supports had a medication that was unfamiliar to her.  She questioned the prescription and got clarification to later find out the pharmacy was in error.  She truly cares about the supported individuals at The Arc NCR and continues to advocate for them every day.

Genneh is not afraid to question with professional respect.  She completes tasks without being asked and communicates day or night with her supervisor to ensure everyone is aware of the needs of the supported individuals. Melissa Martinez

Demonstrating The Arc NCR’s Mission

Melissa demonstrates The Arc NCR’s mission each day by being a true advocate for her caseload.  She will often get to know her caseload by taking time out of her day to have one on one conversations with them, figure out what they like, who they are, and what they want in life.  Her calm demeanor allows people on her caseload to appreciate her presence and know that they can rely on her for their needs.  Recently she made a point to help someone on her caseload find grips for their canes and through trial and error they found a pair that fit perfectly. The person we support then said they felt like their canes were a new ride because they felt better and safer with the grips on.

Displaying Leadership

Melissa demonstrates leadership by gathering resources and then sharing them with her co-workers. She offers to share important documents and walk her co-workers through them when we are pressed for time and they have missed a meeting. She offers to guide them on how to learn a new case management task step by step.  Melissa has a great relationship with the agnecy’s DSPs as well. She will often brainstorm and strategize about how to best support someone.  When a goal is not being achieved, she is able to think critically and talk with DSPs to figure out what any underlying causes. Her relationship with the DSPs is a great asset in her working relationship with them. Melissa is a true leader at The Arc NCR!

Kim McNair

Advocating for Supported Individuals

Kim is a true leader in advocating for those with differing abilities. One of the women in the house she supports has long advocated for gaining alone time.  Kim brought supporting information and documentation to the team to add more support for this idea so that the team could make a well-informed decision. She also mentioned that this woman has made detailed progress since this change has been made.

Kim consistently displays leadership at The Arc NCR! Kim has re-vamped and created a strong and passionate team who are just as dedicated as she is to the mission.  She has displayed creative ideas that have increased the bond and communication between all who work in the house. Kim is pro-active in her job every day!

Judith Miles

Advocating for Supported Individuals

Judi advocates for the people she supports every day. She sees people for who they are, not their differing abilities. Judi knows how important it is for people to feel happy and have choices. Prior to COVID-19, Judi led the after-hours group for individuals in the Personal Supports program. The individuals in that group looked forward to attending every week. Judi provided these supports every week after her normal work hours. She helps to create an environment where the people she supports feel safe and supported. Most recently, Judi has gone out of her way to sit with the men she supports to educate them about COVID-19. They had a difficult time understanding why they could not leave their home. Judi took the time to watch the news with them and explain what everything meant, how it affected them and how they could stay safe.

Enhancing Community Participation for Supported Individuals

Judi understands the importance of community participation. Prior to COVID-19, Judi routinely suggested new community activities. The junior’s group in Community Partners had the opportunity to begin participating in chair Zumba through Harford County Parks & Recreation. Judi asked if she could be the DSP to take them so she could help motivate people and get them engaged. Most recently, Judi has been very creative in getting the men she supports out of the house. They routinely ride bikes in their neighborhood, go for walks, and garden outside.

Jane Nwanne

Jane demonstrates the mission of The Arc NCR by continuing to use Informed Decision Making and Skills System tools in supporting people who struggle in managing their emotions in healthy ways and making decisions that move them toward their goals. She encourages activities in keeping individuals she supports busy and she also supports them in managing stress.

Jane and her co-worker, Caterina, displayed leadership in a medical crisis for one of the individuals supported at The Arc NCR. They worked together and provided CPR for this individual while the other called 911. They both took complete control of the situation and this resulted in a positive outcome.

Nanette Silveroli

Title/Department: Treatment Foster Care

Advocating for Supported Individuals

Nanette continues to work with the Treatment Foster Care Program’s only medically fragile youth and works extremely well with foster parents to ensure all of the youth’s medical needs are met. Nanette uses her strong clinical skills in combination with compassion for vulnerable children to make a difference in their lives. The foster parents Nanette works with hold her in very high regard and look to her for support and guidance.

During her time at The Arc NCR, Nanette has become a leader within the Treatment Foster Care department. Nanette is very knowledgeable of the child welfare system and is always willing to share this knowledge with other team members. Recently, Nanette took it upon herself to identify specific guest speakers for foster parent training to address training needs.

Ginger Robinson

Here are the Highlights from Ginger’s nomination:

Demonstrating The Arc NCR’s Mission

No matter who Ginger has worked with over this last year she has taken the time to build a relationship with each and every person. Ginger is now working in the Community Living program, and the people she previously supported in another program miss her daily.  If she is not present during a class, other people in class notice when she is absent. Everyone looks forward to seeing Ginger each day. She demonstrates what it means to provide quality supports each day.

 

Enhancing Community Participation for Supported Individuals

Ginger is always willing to share information amongst her team members so that the people she supports at The Arc NCR always have a list of ways to engage in community activities. Ginger connects with other people so that friends can hang out, shop, see movies, eat or go to Pizza with Jesus.  Ginger understands the importance of building new relationships for people we support, as well as maintaining relationships and is always coming up with new ways to participate in the community.

Marlice Roberts

Here are the Highlights from Marlice’s nomination:

Demonstrating The Arc NCR’s Mission

Marlice has been with The Arc NCR for over a year and her contributions have been nothing short of tremendous. She has made a huge difference in the life of a young woman who she provided 1:1 supports to in the agency’s Community Living department before transferring into Employment Services. Community Living was sad to see her leave but knew she would do great things in Employment. Once the COVID-19 pandemic hit and our Employment Services program temporarily closed, Marlice opted to work back in Community Living. She was, and continues to be, flexible in what hours she could be available to work and was open to helping wherever and whenever she could.

Displaying Leadership

While working in Community Living through COVID-19, she ended up finding herself working at a location where the people supported tested positive. Many people have been apprehensive about supporting someone who has tested positive, but not Marlice! She jumped in and became one of three staff that dedicated themselves to making sure that the people living in the home she worked in had the support they needed, including working awake-overnight shifts through the quarantine. Marlice put her life on hold so that she could support others, which is a testament to the type of person she is and her character.

Caterina Roberson

Caterina supports the ladies at the house she works in by giving them choices in their lives and supporting them beyond measure. She has been working with them on financial skills to help them acquire some new independence.

Once the pandemic hit it was important to keep the supported individuals busy to keep their minds of COVID. Hollie came up with a daily schedule for the ladies in her house. Every week they cook, exercise, have a Spa Day, do arts and crafts and complete virtual museum visits.  Hollie always empowers individuals with differing abilities to live, work and thrive in the community!

Hollie started making masks for The Arc NCR staff as soon as the pandemic hit. She did this free of charge because she wanted to make sure everyone was safe. She is always a leader through her actions and her pro-active approach in her position at The Arc NCR.

Marievette Orengo

Demonstrating The Arc NCR’s Mission

Marievette is a loyal and dedicated Direct Support Professional. She is consistently going above and beyond what is expected of her, and champions the people supported in the Personal Supports program. She works in Cecil County, an area that is too far for many of our team members to be able to work.  In light of this staffing deficit, Marievette never fails to rise to the occasion. She works well beyond the hours required of her and maintains exceptional flexibility with her schedule. It is her hard work and dedication that makes effective staffing possible for the individuals she supports. She is simply an indispensable member of the Personal Supports team, not only for her exceptional presence, but the quality of support she provides and the strong relationships she has developed with the individuals she supports and their families.

Enhancing Community Participation for Supported Individuals

Marievette is always looking for new ways to engage in the community. Though this has been more of a challenge since COVID-19 began, she is not often comfortable being stationary. She is always assisting the individuals she supports to engage in the community in meaningful ways, whether it be advocating for them in day programs, activities, or other events. She is also willing and able to flex her schedule around making some of these things happen, even when they occur outside of her normal work hours.  She understands the importance of community engagement for the people we support!

Amanda Wurm

Title/Department: Personal Supports/Community Living

Here are the Highlights from Amanda’s nomination:

Demonstrating The Arc NCR’s Mission

When COVID-19 began, Amanda kept her positive attitude and began supporting people in the Community Living program.  She had previously worked in Employment Services but was willing to help out where needed during COVID-19.  Amanda donated recognition gifts to her fellow Direct Support Professionals that included PPE and reusable bags for their cell phones. In addition, Amanda supported an individual who requires positive modeling and redirection due to various challenges, and she did it with grace. Amanda was able to work with this individual to get them out of the office safely, educating her on adhering to public safety. When Amanda recently moved back into her Job Developer position, the person she had been supporting in Community Living reported “I am so very sad she has to go, but I’m so happy that I had her in my life”.

Displaying Leadership

Amanda has been a strong leader from the minute she started with The Arc NCR. She quickly moved from her initial position into a Job Developer position in the Employment Services program, which is very well suited for her. She is the go-between for individuals and potential jobs, as well as reaching out to the community to create new positions for people with differing abilities. Amanda has been able to successful place many people with differing abilities into community integrated positions since taking on this new role.

Demonstrating The Arc NCR’s Mission

Atari started her employment with The Arc NCR in the Community Living department in June of 2020, months after the pandemic had hit.  The organization was operating under their new normal, including the way team members came onboard.  New Employee Orientation is completed virtually, as well as many of the traditional in-person things a person does when first starting at new job.  Onboarding virtually can be a challenge, but Atari took the new system in stride.

Displaying Leadership

About one month into her employment with The Arc NCR, Atari found herself working at a home where people supported had tested positive for COVID-19. Atari did not hesitate to jump into action and when asked if she was comfortable working she simply responded, “Of course. This is what we do.” She continues to provide a high level of support and shows great care and compassion for the women she supports, and we are so grateful to have her at our organization.

Michael Solis

Here are the Highlights from Michael’s nomination:

Demonstrating The Arc NCR’s Mission

Michael started as a Direct Support Professional in The Arc NCR’s Personal Supports program, however, due to COVID-19 our Personal Supports program has been drastically reduced. There was a sudden and urgent need in our Community Living program, so Michael offered to work in one of the homes to help support people.  He was committed to the organization, no matter what program he worked in.  Michael jumped right in to working in Community Living and has been a huge help throughout the pandemic.

Displaying Leadership

Michael ended up working in a home where two of the three people living tested positive for COVID-19. He did not hesitate to jump in and continued to provide supports while the gentlemen were under isolation and the home continued to be under quarantine. He worked 12-hour overnight shifts for several days in a row, putting the rest of his life on hold to self-isolate when he was not working. He kept a positive attitude and did what had to be done to keep people we support, team members and the community safe. His energy and compassion are a true asset to our organization, and we cannot thank you him enough.
