Julia

A Family Support Services Story

Family Support Services (FSS) supports hundreds of families annually by connecting them with resources and helping them navigate and access services within and outside of disability service systems. They also provide case management and offer trainings and Parent Night Outs events.

One family supported by FSS involves a woman named, Julia, a Mom of three children, often referred to as “Super Mom.” Julia is a newly single mom raising three boys.  One of her children has Cerebral Palsy, is autistic, and is non-verbal. The Mom was raising the children on her own and needed an array of assistance with finding resources for her son with differing abilities, as well as her and her other two children. She was diligent in following through on all resources provided to her and due to her efforts, was able to get approved for assistance. She was also able to secure Case Management resources through the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA), as well as Rare and Expensive Case Management (REM) to help her son in navigating through his disabilities both in school and at home. In addition, her hard efforts at job hunting were successful, securing employment earlier this year at Harford Academy. Her position not only provided her financial independence, but the ability to work during her son’s school hours. She is a true advocate and role model for her son, as well as for other parents going through similar life changes. Julia is a “Super Mom”, and she is doing an amazing job raising all three boys on her own.
