Dr. Karyn Harvey
Psychologist, Author, Trainer, Speaker
Karyn Harvey has worked as a clinician in the field of intellectual disabilities for over 35 years. She has her Ph.D. in Applied Developmental Psychology from the University of Maryland. She has written three books: Positive Identity Development, Trauma –Informed Behavioral Interventions and Trauma and Healing, as well as several chapters in various publications and a variety of articles. She currently has a private practice and does therapy with people with intellectual disabilities. In addition, she regularly conducts trainings on trauma-informed support for people with IDD, trauma-informed leadership, and trauma-informed behavioral interventions for both state and individual organizations throughout the US and Canada. She has trained numerous trainers throughout the United States and Canada in conducting trauma informed supports training. In the last several years she has received awards for her clinical service from NADD, START and AAIDD. Training Description:
Training will introduce mental health issues commonly seen when working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). It will explore aspects of trauma experienced in their lives and treatments that are beneficial. Case studies will be shared. Finally, a positive identity development approach will be introduced, and therapeutic tools will be offered.
Training Objectives:
- Identify common mental health issues encountered when working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
- Understand the impact of trauma experienced by individuals with IDD and its effect on their mental health.
- Examine effective treatments and interventions for mental health issues in individuals with IDD.
- Analyze case studies to better understand real-world applications of mental health and trauma treatment in the context of IDD.
- Explore the concept of positive identity development for individuals with IDD and its importance in mental health and well-being.
- Learn therapeutic tools and techniques that promote positive identity and support mental health in individuals with IDD.
Continuing Education Units/CEU’s:
This event is being cohosted by Arrow Children and Families Ministries who will also be providing continuing education units. Arrow Child and Family Ministries is accredited and sponsored to provide Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through the following accreditation providers:

Arrow Child & Family Ministries is authorized by the Board of Social Work Examiners in
Maryland to sponsor social work continuing education learning activities and maintains
full responsibility for this program. This training qualifies for Category I continuing
education units. - Maryland Board of Professional Counselors
Arrow Child & Family Ministries has been approved by the Maryland State Board of Examiners
as an authorized sponsor who may provide Category A CEUs for certified or licensed
professional counselors, marriage and family therapists, and alcohol and drug counselors and
maintains responsibility for the program.
